The Charlatans 20th Anniversary

Jade French and Ciara Hill from Same Teens got together with Tim Burgess and a host of other people to take a look back over the 20 years since the first Charlatans album.

For a band to hit the 20th year mark with a heap of relevant albums still coming out, for a band to be a beacon of an era and for a band to manage to transcend and change their times means that it is a band worth knowing. Luckily The Charlatans (Tim Burgess, Mark Collins, Tony Rogers, Martin Blunt and Jon Brookes) have managed to become just that.

The Charlatans

With their 20th Anniversary of album ‘Some Friendly‘ finally here, their Roundhouse gig selling out in minutes and slots at festivals such as Barcelona’s ‘Primavera Sound’ they’ve proven this year will be one to remember- and that’s just the tip of the iceberg! Their most recent album ‘You Cross My Path‘ was not only believed to be the bands best album to date but was also released free by the band showing not only altruistic motivations but also perhaps slight contempt for parts of the music industry. From the beginning until now they have been a band for the fans.

So to celebrate the achievements of The Charlatans we have put together a bumper Charlatans feature in order to delve a little deeper into their music and to also see how this music has impinged on their listeners. Happy Anniversary!

2O YEARS OF THE CHARLATANS

Despite their gargantuan size on the music circuit the Charlatans have always found time and derived pleasure from helping out those just starting. From getting Faris Badwan of ‘The Horrors’ to draw the cover for their album ‘You Cross My Path’ to a producing debut working on Hatcham Social’s album and hand-picking relatively new bands for his Isle of Wight stage including SCUM and Poppy and the Jezebels.

We caught up with a few people who have been supported along the way by Tim Burgess to ask them what their standout moments of the band have been…

Amazing – I first heard You Cross My Path when it was a download and got everything backwards!! Got my Roundhouse tickets for the Some Friendly gigs. When’s the next album?

  2. A Holland says:

Great stuff! Didn’t realise they’d been going for twenty years already! Congrats and some good writing in there :)

  3. K Hunter says:

The Charlatans are the best. Can’t believe I’m missing the Some Friendly gigs (I live in California), they will be truly unbelievably amazing! Great to hear Tim’s thoughts on Some Friendly and their album back catalogue. Still love them after 20 years.

  4. Steve Telecaster says:

This has got me really excited about their London gig – I just heard you can buy the live recording on CD straight after the gig. Wow!! Going to play Some Friendly again now

  5. K Arneil says:

I’ve followed the Charlatans since day one ! My first gig was the Some Friendly gig at the Glasgows Barrowlands in 1990 – awesome.

    Charlatans Forever.

It’s hard to express what The Charlatans mean to me.

I saw them live, in Exeter I think, when I was 14-years-old. That night changed everything for me – for good or ill.

    I’m 33 now.

These boys have provided the soundtrack to my life.

Tim, Jon, Martin, Mark, Tony, Rob – thanks for it all.

  7. Justin Jones says:

Like the above I have followed the boys from the early 90’s. Love em to death. Seen them over 10 times. Brixton Academy nights are some of the best nights of my life. Love, Cross my path and Up to our Hips.
I moved to California last year and was gutted when they had to pull out of their US tour last year due to John’s Shoulder Injury. Got tickets for the bimbo365 show. Hope they’ll look to play again soon.

Thanks to the Charlatans for all the memories. Keep em coming. You are fuckin rock.
